ACSA’s Joint Worksite Health and Safety Committees Course

Your ACSA has created a half-day course to assist members in meeting the Joint Worksite Health and Safety Committees (JWHSC) requirements under the new OHS Act. The course topics include introduction to JWHSCs, JWHSC duties and terms of reference, JWHSC meetings, JWHSC member training, and roles and responsibilities for Health and Safety Representatives (HSR). The course also offers several free resources with customizable templates that will allow members to efficiently set up and run an effective JWHSC.

ACSA has submitted the completed course and resources to the Government of Alberta (GoA) for approval.  We are also waiting for clarification from the GoA as to whether this half-day course will be considered part of the mandatory 16 hours of JWHSC training now required under the OHS Act.

The ACSA will begin offering the new JWHSC course as soon as it is approved by the GoA. We have been in contact with the Ministry of Labour and we are awaiting an update from them.

Relevant training for JWHSC members and HSRs

In addition to the new JWHSC course, the ACSA has several courses that will assist JWHSC members and HSRs to fulfill their responsibilities under the new OHS Act. These courses include Leadership for Safety Excellence (2 day), Workplace Investigation Basics (1 day), and Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Legislation Awareness (1 day). A half-day Respectful Workplace course is currently under development and will be ready for delivery by Summer of 2018.
