Safety Showdown Builds Camaraderie to Prevent Injuries in Alberta’s Construction Industry

JUNE 2025 – After a month of building camaraderie among Alberta’s construction crews, the Alberta Construction Safety Association’s (ACSA) first-ever Safety Showdown contest has come to a close.

Throughout May, more than 150 teams took up the safety challenge, with nearly 500 participants testing their safety skills through daily quizzes and accessing daily resources to win prizes, including daily gift cards, weekly team lunches and a grand prize luxury suite at a Calgary Flames or Edmonton Oilers regular season game.

Designed to integrate into existing workplace activities, such as toolbox talks, Safety Showdown encouraged meaningful conversations around preventing industry-specific injuries while reinforcing a culture of shared responsibilities.

“Safety Showdown was designed to bring crews together, recognizing safety as a shared responsibility through a fun, engaging contest,” said Mark Hoosein, ACSA CEO. “It strengthens camaraderie and reinforces best practices. Safety is about people, and it starts with connection. It is a shared responsibility across all levels within the construction workforce.”

Congratulations to all our winners:

  • Grand prize luxury suite at a regular season Oilers or Flames game: Pretium Construction West
  • Weekly team lunches: BAR Engineering, Northwest Hydraulic Consultants, Jet Hyrdovac and Kidco
  • Daily draw winners: 19 individuals across Alberta won EverythingCard gift cards

Access resources to keep up the momentum

This summer, ACSA is spotlighting resources from the Safety Showdown contest – tools designed to help prevent injuries among workers in their first year at a company. These workers account for more than half of all Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) claims in Alberta construction.
