In light of recent changes to the WHMIS legislation, we have been receiving a large number of enquiries about how it could affect your company. We have also received warnings about some companies applying high pressure sales tactics trying to scare people into purchasing unnecessary training. You should know that there are many free resources already available on this topic, including those from your ACSA.
It is important for employers and workers to be aware of the changes regarding WHMIS as they have a significant impact on WHMIS in the workplace.
The new WHMIS 2015 is the system in Canada used for classifying and labelling hazardous workplace chemicals (“controlled products”). This updated system now aligns with the Globally Harmonized System for Classifying and Labelling Chemicals (GHS). Countries around the world are adopting a consistent system to enable a single international system for chemical classification and labelling. Both the European Union and the United States are well on their way to implementing changes consistent with GHS and Canada is doing the same.
